Blood spots & angiomas

Cherry angiomas are also known as ‘blood spots’, they are harmless vascular lesions in the skin and are very common. They have the appearance of a bright red blemish or spot that is slightly raised. This type of lesion is not typically a problem unless it bleeds often or changes in size, shape or colour.

Another harmless vascular lesion is spider nevus or spider angioma which is a small cluster of capillaries with a centrally dilated blood vessel giving the lesion a web or spider-like appearance. They can appear singly on a cheek or in numbers. They are harmless but can lead to feelings of self – consciousness and can be more visibly ageing than lines and wrinkles.

Thread veins are similar to varicose veins only smaller. Sometimes known as spider veins, they are often red or blue in colour and are closer to the surface of the skin than varicose veins. They usually appear near the ankle, over the inside of the knee and outside of the thigh.

FOCUS ON: As you age there becomes less collagen in your skin, leaving it thinner and the thin spider like vascular lesions on your face become more visible. Sun damage, rosacea, alcohol and smoking can all accentuate the appearance of these thread veins. Dietary and life style advice from our experts at ethos can help minimise this as can Regenlite laser treatment that not only can be used to shrink the blood vessels but can also be used to boost the skins collagen content.

More on angiomas…

Cherry angiomas: The exact cause of cherry angiomas is unclear. There may be a genetic factor that makes people more susceptible and they have been linked to pregnancy, exposure to chemicals and climate. There appears to be a link with age where they often appear when individuals reach the age of 30 and then they increase in size and number with age.

Spider angioma: The causes of spider nevi is not clear and various factors may result in spider nevi, such as exposure to sun, injury, changes in hormone levels and underlying illness such liver disease. They can commonly occur when you have a lot of oestrogen in your system, for instance during pregnancy or in the case of chronic liver disease.

Spider veins: They can occur in a region that has suffered an injury and bruising, which, after healing leaves thread veins. Their formation may also be part of an inherited problem and they can run in families. Thread veins may begin during hormonal surges, like pregnancy. In some people they are secondary to varicose veins and cannot be successfully treated until the varicose veins have been fully resolved.
